    Day 92: Villach

    Day 92: Villach

JULY 4 - No washing machine in hotel, but there is laundromat a few blocks away. It isn’t simple to figure out, everything is automatic and the machine itself is paid for an operated by a central panel, all in German. It ends up costing about EUR 20 for one load.

Villach sits at an important crossing between Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. The Romans made an outpost here, and in the centuries since, it became a center for trading. Its affiliation with Austria is not longstanding, as it was acquired by the Austro-Hungarian Empire only in 1759. It became an important railway depot in the late 1800’s, and this unfortunately led to it being almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing raids in WWII.

We take the train for 20 minutes northeast to the hamlet of Sattendorf, on the north shore of the Ossiacher See, an elongated lake that fills a valley.

Walking up a side street in Sattendorf. You could hardly ask for a more German-looking house.

A view over the Ossiacher See. Like the rivers in this region, the water is a slight turquoise hue. This color is often seen when the water is sourced from limestone rock formations. In this case, the Julian Alps and surrounding ranges are clearly limestones.

Big storm tonight, are treated to the sound of thunder echoing off the mountains around Villach.

    COST SUMMARY:

This is our final full day in Austria. I broke it out from everywhere else as a single country due to the high expected costs.

Projected daily cost from the pre-planning phase = $250/day

    Realized daily average costs for June 30 - July 4 = $223/day

The share of this cost apportioned to lodging was about 41%, food 31%, and transport 21%, with entry fees comparatively low.
