JULY 12 - We say goodbye to our apartment, which looks like a museum display of antique furniture, complete with display cases in the hallway.
Down to the bus station for our ride up into the mountains. Unlike almost every other bus we’ve been on, this one looks to be almost all backpackers. A significant number of them apparently got on in Venice, and on their way to Vienna. We wind up though the coastal hills, with a thin line of homes along the road but otherwise thick with forests.
And here we leave the land of pasta for another major segment of the trip. It would have been nice to do more things in Italy, but the daily cost is a bit more than I want for an extended period, and our 90 Schengen visas are going to run out soon anyway.
COST SUMMARY:
This is our final day in Italy. As with Austria, I broke it out from everywhere else as a single country. I did expect it to be similar to Austria but was curious how close it would be.
Projected daily cost from the pre-planning phase = $250/day
Realized daily average costs for July 5 - July 12 = $211/day
The share of this cost apportioned to lodging was about 39%, food 41%, and transport 12%. Maybe I can blame high food cost on how eager we always were to eat at good restaurants.
