    Day 240: İstanbul

    Day 240: İstanbul

Nov 29 - Not much goes on today for us, apart from work and repacking. We’ve spent over a month now using things from only two large backpacks and two day packs. Our larger roller bag/backpack and a smaller roller bag contain stuff that we really aren’t using much. So, today we take everything out of both roller bags and make decisions on each item. This leaves us with the smaller roller bag filled only with things we are willing to leave behind. We give it to the owner of the hotel, who will donate it to a worthy cause. So my plan has finally come to pass, to reduce our load to three large bags and two small day packs.

Time to say goodbye to ‘Bluey’, our luggage companion since Helsinki.

I seek out yet another photocopy center to print out some visas and we buy a few pieces of baklava, our last Turkish dessert. It is raining, but Odette and I head down, across the highway to the seawall.

No kids in the playground today, only some cats.

Back in late September this street was full of hungry tourists and the kitchens were hopping. Now the touts can only look at us imploringly as we walk up the cold street, hope fading from their eyes as we pass by without a glance at the menu.

    COST SUMMARY:

This is our final day in Türkiye. I have averaged our month plus time here with the weeks we spent in Georgia, as the two were not noticeably different in cost.

Projected daily cost from the pre-planning phase = $150/day

Realized daily average costs for Sep 18 to Nov 30 (excluding Iran) = $103/day

The share of this cost apportioned to lodging was 37%, food 13%, and transport 24%. Entry fees for touristic sites and day tours came in at 23%, high only because accommodation and food were so cheap. Overall the cost structure was very similar to the Balkans.
