Morning starts with a trip to the edge of the sea. Bombay Beach gives a decidedly quirky view.

Onward to experience Salvation Mountain. Created by painting and sculpting the natural desert landscape, it was the artistic vision of Leonard Knight, who wanted to create a monument to non-denominational faith. The project began in 1984. Mr. Knight passed away in 2014, but donations have kept basic upkeep going since.

On to the unincorporated and off-the-grid settlement of Slab City. On the edge of town is East Jesus, which is apparently an officially recognized museum in the State of California. The art is meant to be interacted with, and injury is possible.

We then spend about an hour searching for active mud volcanos - “mud pots”, finally locate some near a geothermal plant.

The fun part of the day ends at the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. Not many birds at midday, but did see a rabbit (not shown in photo).
