    Day 344: Malang - Probolinggo

Mar 13 - Train not until 16:30 today, so need to fill in the time with something. Walk to Kampung Tridi (Colorful Village), just to the south.

The village is all within a deep canyon formed by one of the rivers that flows through Malang. It has all the trappings of a tourist attraction, though I didn’t see any historical reason why it was painted up like this.

It cost $1 for all three of us to enter, so not a big cash layout for 30 minutes of wandering.

The ride takes us straight north for an hour, then an hour east to Probolinggo. Arrive at night but close to hotel so walk the gear in. Not much for sidewalks here but the traffic is not so bad. The Bromo Park Hotel is the tallest building around. Go get some cash at an ATM and food.

    Today’s route: (A) Malang, (B) Probolinggo.

IndonesiaDrive off the ferry and off across Bali, from the west tip along the southern coast, eastward to Denpasar. The difference between here and Java is striking. Gone are (almost) all the mosques, replaced by thousands of small Balinese Hindu temples. There is virtually one in every house compound. Also gone are the wild mountain slopes of the eastern end of Java, replaced with flat coastal topography and rice fields.
