Mar 15 - I get a lot done in the morning and Odette does some math. We go on a major expedition with bags of clothes to find a laundry. Finally find one that can get us our clothes back in the afternoon, and for cheap ($4).
In the afternoon, head off to the east of town to a seaside park called Pantai Bentar (Bentar Beach), using a Grab. The place is completely empty, with just a few vendors and a couple guys hanging around to collect the $0.30 admission fee.
The only real adventure today was getting back from Bentar Beach. Leaving the park, there was no one around except a few cops at a police station. Grab would not give us any car options, just a motorbike. And we can only order one at a time. The road is full of traffic, but its all going at high speed and there’s no good place to stand. I go to the cops and start a friendly exchange about our plight, and after ten minutes they offer to find us a couple guys to go by motorbike for free. But as we are contemplating this, a public bus comes by (fast, no bus stop here), and the one cop runs out and flags it down. It costs $2 for the three of us. However, before we get to town, the fee collector tries to convince us to get off and go with some rickshaws that just happen to be clustered around. Its obviously a show to give business to them, and it isn’t even clear they understand where we want to go. Some are shouting about Mt. Bromo, which obviously we aren’t going to at this hour. Despite lots of shouted pleas that we need to get off the bus, we stay on and eventually arrive more or less in the middle of Probolinggo and can walk the rest of it.
