Apr 8 - Bumpy flight, not much to look at except for menacing clouds. There is free airplane food for once.
Immigration stamps upon arrival in Kuching. Somewhere in the back of my mind I was wondering about this. Sarawak is a bit different, separated by an ocean, and culturally distinct. There is no special visa requirements for us, but I note that Malaysians coming in are also presenting passports, which seems strange. More on this later.
The view from our Grab taxi into town is unusually inspirational. There is no one particular thing I can say about it, but the look of downtown Kuching has a lot going for it. It is a big city but does not feel that way. Big glass and steel buildings cohabitate with small Chinese family stores. There is sort of a clean order to the streets. Any everywhere the Sarawakian flag.
Our hotel is located in a quiet historical district. I stroll around for an hour before evening sets in.
