    Day 326: Hua Hin

    Day 326: Hua Hin

Feb 23 - The growth of Hua Hin as a city began fairly recently, and may only have become a town as late as the mid 1800’s. It became the most popular beach destination and was a favorite of several Thai kings, including Rama IX.

A few inquiries establish that there is a songthaew from near our hotel to Khao Takiap, about 30 minutes south along the coast. For 25 Baht we head that way.

Great little eatery here specializing in the above dish, Khao Soi.

Before going to the beach and the more famous temples, we visit Wat Khao Lan Thom. Very quiet, as we are the only people there.

There are a number of hotels here that block a lot of the access to the beach. However, there is a well marked public entrance.

The hill involves some concrete stairs, and a tough gauntlet of lean, hungry macaques. We were advised beforehand to carry a stick, as this deters little hands from grabbing at our pack or hats. The Khao Takiap temple complex is a jumble of buildings, some wats and other structures, and is in a state of some disrepair. Monkeys and dogs roam the empty rooms.

Wat Khao Takiap, or the ‘Monkey Temple’. It sits near the top of Chopsticks Hill, and has good views of the sea (Gulf of Thailand). I did notice, however, that visibility isn’t that great today. There is a haze that limits the view to the north part of Hua Hin but no further. It could be because it is the dry season and they have started burning fields.
