    Day 41: Oulanka National Park

    Day 41: Oulanka National Park

MAY 14 - We were technically in this same national park yesterday, but a section to the south. Today we enter the main section and park at the visitor’s center. This portion of the park is focused on the Oulankajoki River.

We took the Könkään Keino trail, an 8 km loop.

Like everywhere we go, lakes abound.

The Oulonkajoki River. In the 1890’s, a floating route was opened all the way downstream. Logs were felled in this region and floated to saw mills at the White Sea in Russia. This business ended during WWI and no floating of logs has occurred since.
There is a series of rapids along the Oulonkajoki. Due to the warm weather the last few days, runoff from melting snow has brought a lot more water than what is normally seen.
